Charleston, SC - Charleston Police Department's Traffic Division, DUI Task Force, and patrol officers, will be stepping up their DUI efforts this Super Bowl Sunday, February 7th, as part of a national "Fans Don't Let Fans Drive Drunk" campaign.
Before you finalize your plans for the big game this weekend, Charleston Police Department encourages you to celebrate safely. Charleston Police Department recommends the following tips:
According to research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2008, fatalities in DUI crashes accounted for 32% of all motor vehicle traffic fatalities. On Super Bowl Sunday 2008, 49% of the fatalities occurred in crashes where a driver or motorcycle rider had a blood alcohol concentration level of .08 or higher.
The Charleston Police Department will conduct traffic safety DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols over the upcoming weekend in an effort to reduce the number of alcohol related crashes and to make our streets and communities safer. The goal is to remain highly visible and to discourage those who have been drinking from getting behind the wheel. Officers will target those who make the poor decision to drive intoxicated.
The Charleston Police Department wants to make sure that every football fan enjoys the big game safely. Super Bowl Sunday is about good fun, good friends, good food, and good competition. Drive safe. Enjoy the game. Designate a sober driver.
The DUI Task Force is funded in part by a grant from the South Carolina Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
